Product Introduction
Molecular Formula : CsI
CAS NO. : 7789-17-5
Formula weight: 259.810
Product Introduction : Cesium iodide is a white crystalline powder; soluble in water and alcohol; density 4.51g/ml, melting point 626℃, boiling point 1280℃, water solubility 74g/100ml (20℃).
Product Standards :
Use : cesium iodide mainused in crystal manufacturing; pharmaceutical industry; analytical reagent; infrared spectrometer prism;X-ray fluorescent screen; scintillation counter, etc.
Packing : 1kg/bottle, 25kg/drum, or packed on demand.
Colorless crystals or crystalline powder. Deliquescent. Light-sensitive. Very soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in methanol, almost insoluble in acetone. Relative density 4.5. Melting point 621℃. Boiling point about 1280℃. Refractive index 1.7876.
Cesium iodide will have a sky-blue flame when burned on a flame.
Cesium iodide can react with silver nitrate: CsI+AgNO3==CsNO3+AgI↓, where AgI (silver iodide) is a yellow solid insoluble in water.
Cesium iodide can also react with mercurous nitrate to obtain cesium nitrate and mercurous iodide: 2CsI+Hg2(NO3)2==2CsNO3+Hg2I2↓
Avoid contact with oxides, moisture/humidity. Soluble in water and ethyl acetate. The solubility in 100g water is 44g (0℃), 160g (61℃). It can react with iodine to generate stable cesium triiodide CsI3. It can release iodine under the influence of oxidants.
Application Areas
Cesium iodide is widely used in many fields, mainly including the following aspects:
● Scintillator material: Cesium iodide is an efficient scintillator material, widely used in nuclear physics, high energy physics, X-ray astronomy and medical imaging. When high energy rays (such as X-rays, gamma rays) interact with cesium iodide crystals, light scintillation occurs, thereby converting these high energy rays into visible light. This property makes cesium iodide an ideal material for X-ray detectors and gamma ray detectors.
● Photoconductive devices: Due to its high photoconductivity, cesium iodide can be used to make photoconductive devices such as photoconductive switches and photoconductive detectors. These devices have broad application prospects in optical communications, optical signal processing, photoelectric measurement and other fields.
● Ion beam analysis: In ion beam analysis, cesium iodide can be used as an emitting material for ion sources. Due to its high volatility, cesium iodide can release a large amount of cesium ions at high temperatures, thus providing a stable ion source for ion beam analysis.
● Solar cells: In recent years, cesium iodide has also received widespread attention in the field of solar cells. Due to its unique optoelectronic properties, cesium iodide can be used as a light-absorbing material for solar cells to improve the conversion efficiency of solar cells. In addition, cesium iodide can also be combined with other materials to form a new type of solar cell structure.
● Nonlinear optics: The nonlinear optical properties of cesium iodide also make it play an important role in some special optical applications. For example, in the fields of optical frequency conversion, optical modulation and optical switching, cesium iodide can be used as a key nonlinear optical material.
● Catalyst: Cesium iodide can also be used as a catalyst for certain chemical reactions. For example, in some organic synthesis reactions, cesium iodide can be used as a Lewis acid catalyst to promote the reaction. In addition, cesium iodide can also be used to catalyze some metal organic reactions, such as the addition reaction of olefins, etc..
● Optical storage material: Due to its excellent optical properties, cesium iodide can also be used as an optical storage material. For example, in optical disc storage technology, cesium iodide can be used as a recording layer material for optical discs to achieve data storage and reading.
● Digital X-ray Detectors: Cesium iodide has important applications in the field of digital X-ray detector manufacturing. Due to its high scintillation efficiency, high spatial resolution, and high spectral sensitivity, cesium iodide performs well in X-ray detectors. Compared with gadolinium oxysulfide, cesium iodide has higher sensitivity and lower X-ray dose, and is safer.
